The key to coaching is found in partnership.

How I Coach – As your coach, I will inquire, encourage, support, probe, challenge, and listen for the truths that identify your personality. I am more interested in the discovery of who you are as a person than making performance assessment the primary focus of attention. However, it is my role as your coach to move you into action. You are responsible for your outcomes, how quickly you attain them, and how far you stretch. As your coach, I am your advocate, a catalyst, and compassionate truth teller.

To assist in establishing a partnership, the following matters are outlined for discussion purposes:

Coaching compatibility – in order to assess the compatibility of relationship, an initial 30 minute consult will be arranged between the coach and client. This will be a no obligation session to explore the possibility of a partnership. To further assist in finding a good ‘fit’ in the coaching partnership, the prospective client may be requested to complete the Coaching Readiness Assessment.

Coaching relationship – The coaching relationship is just that, a relationship. It will be subject to the ebb and flow of normal relational encounters. Since it will not be static there is need for open and honest two-way feedback. Mid-course changes are likely and should be expected. The length of the coaching relationship along with the frequency of sessions will be agreed upon when the partnership is established. However, should either party conclude that the coaching/client relationship is not working, either has the other’s permission to end the partnership.

Coaching sessions – Some or all of the coaching may be through telephone conversation. Coaching calls will be initiated by the client. Face to face meetings will take place at an agreed upon location.

Coaching partnership – a formal partnership will be developed and agreed upon by both the coach and the client before the first coaching session is scheduled. Expectations, length and frequency of coaching sessions, fees and informal contact arrangements will be discussed and itemized in the partnership agreement.

Additional contact –You are free to contact me in between sessions to share successes, discuss struggles or make general inquiries. These contacts can either be made by phone (each conversation should be limited to 10 minutes) or by e-mail at dave.lewis@cogeco.ca. You will not be billed for these additional contacts.

Questions to advance the partnership negotiation process:

What will make a coaching partnership work for you?

What are you looking for in a coaching relationship?

What would be your expectations for the length of the coaching partnership and the frequency of coaching sessions?

What is your preference for the way in which we meet?

What value would you place on a coaching partnership and what would you consider a reasonable fee? What form of payment would be most suitable for you?
